Seminar Observations by Vinny D'Antonio

On December 4th I was fortunate enough to attend a seminar given by Sifu Jose Grados. Sifu Grados proves how and why Wing Chun is effective by not straying from its comcepts.

Starting from the beginning of the system he demonstrates proper horse stance. He explains proper positioning of the feet, legs, knees, hips, spine, arms and head. By not doing these things together properly the structure of the horse will not be stable. Therefore making the horse less effective.

He next demonstrates the proper structure of the Wing Chun punch. Starting in a proper stance horse) he explains the dynamics of the straight punch.

From this he demonstrates how to use different types of horses to enter while executing the straight punch. The different types of horses used are, entering horse, inside and outside facing horse and bracing horse. If used properly these horses are effective in gaining control of the centerline. Therefore controlling the fight. This enforces the concepts of proper structure, how and why it works. He also explains how to use your Bong Sao in coordination with these different horses to either destroy your opponents structure or turn out (redirect) his energy while he is trying to enter on you.

While demonstrating these concepts he explains how to properly close the gap to your opponent. Once the gap is closed you simultaneously bridge the gap. Once the gap is bridged you are close enough to execute the strike. By demonstrating this he covers many of Wing Chun's theories. Such as timing, distances awareness, hand replacement, speed and proper structure to move in on the centerline. This also covers the concepts of moving in, closing the gap, bridging the gap, and running the hands over or under the bridge.

Sifu Grados also explains the importance of proper Tan Sao, Bong Sao, Lop Sao. He also covers each of theDon Chi Sao's the various Lop Sao's and the running hands using the theories of sensitivity.

From the beginning of the seminar sifu encompasses all of the Wing Chun concepts and theories and some personal thoughts of his own. It would be impossible to discuss all of the topics he touched upon but as an avid practitioner I must honestly say that by attending this seminar it has honed and polished the Wing Chun theories and concepts from the beginning of the system to the level I am presently at. At no point in this seminar has Sifu strayed from any of the Wing Chun concepts. He has proved that if Wing Chun is practiced honestly it will prove itself. Which other system can claim this but Wing Chun?

Weather you were a beginner or a advanced student Sifu Grados has instilled something in you by the end of the seminar. I would like to thank Sifu personally for putting the time and energy into his training to be able to bring us such a complete and understanding seminar.
