Wing Chun for Combat
My thoughts on the subject
By Sifu Jose Grados
Although Wing Chun is a block and strike system; training for actual combat can be a hard concept to understand.
The way I teach my students is: They learn to block without the counter attack. Once they build their blocking skills I make them block everything their partner throws at them. That way they learn to respond naturally from force coming at any angle that is not pre-aranged. This will prepare them for an actual street situation.
In a street fight they are not going to tell you what they will throw, they just throw it. I believe that if you train yourself to block all attacks then you will surely be able to block and strike.
Now I will mention from my combat experience what you should build upon:
Mental Aspect: By this I mean to accept anything and to always be ready for anything.
Killer Instinct: Prepare yourself to go all out no matter what.
Physical: You must be prepared for a short or a long fight. Always be conditioned.
Mental Calmness: You must be as relaxed as you can. You must be prepared to give as you are to receive.
Structure: Your stance must be solid. You must use your body as a unit to build true power based on the center of gravity. With this no one will move you.
Faith: Have complete faith in that what you have. Know it will work for you, and it will!
Economy of Motion: Waste no time in eliminating anything and everything in front of you because, remember; it will not hesitate to eliminate you!
Remember that Wing Chun is Offensive: Move firstDon't wait to be moved on.
Power: Do not release all your power on the attack. Use flexibility on the end of contact. Loose joints will give you elastic power. Explosive power becomes true power!
